Facing a DUI charge (driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol) in Los Angeles County is often stressful—not to mention expensive. In fact, DUI charges are among the most costly misdemeanors in Southern California, as a single charge typically involves numerous financial penalties and associated costs. In 2021, a DUI can run you anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000. Here’s how.

DUI Offenses Involve Two Separate Battles

When a DUI arrest occurs, you’ll need to fight two different battles. One involves criminal prosecution in the Superior Court, while the other involves the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Although a DUI stems from driving, it is a criminal offense that will likely result in a conviction. Contrary to some people’s understanding, both misdemeanor and felony convictions remain on your record for life. The criminal charge costs more than the DMV action, as this process involves bail, attorney fees, court costs, and expenses such as DUI classes and ignition interlock device (IID) installation.

The DMV action is administrative and involves only your driving privilege. While there are no significant monetary penalties nor a risk of jail associated with the DMV action, you will still incur attorney fees and possibly costs associated with subpoenaing witnesses to the administrative per se hearing. If the DMV suspends your driving privilege, you may not drive in the State of California even if you have an out-of-state driver’s license. It is not your license that is suspended, but your privilege to operate a motor vehicle in California. Moreover, California has agreements with many other states which means your driving privilege will be suspended elsewhere as well.

A DUI in Los Angeles County Can Cost Over $10,000

For those facing a first-time DUI misdemeanor charge, costs can escalate quickly. You may be required to pay bail or remain in jail, depending on circumstances. Bail averages between $500-$1000 (if imposed) for a first-time DUI. You will likely have to pay the arresting police agency and the towing company $200-300 simply to get your car back after you’re released from jail. Although a first-offense DUI in California specifies a mandatory $390 fine, you will pay additional penalty assessments and other fees that will increase this to nearly $2,000. Installing an IID can cost up to $500 plus monthly fees. Your mandatory participation in DUI school is not free either. Your automobile insurance premiums will Increase following a DUI conviction. By the time you’ve completed the terms of your DUI conviction, you will have paid many thousands of dollars.
